HFM Screens...

I know this may have been brought up before, but what
exactly do the screens in the stock M3 HFM do? They
look somewhat restrictive, but do they really serve a
purpose? I know on other perfomance cars, the
aftermarket HFM's have no screens at all. Is this just
a factory safeguard? TIA...
