<E36> brake pad warning light will not turn off...

Just replaced pads and rear brake sensor (front sensor was intact)

I have read all kinds of messages for this problem, ranging from "you must
replace the wiring harness" to "you have to start the car 12 times to clear
the buffer"...
So, I ask (and I am sure that this has been covered before - apologies):
For a 93 318I US model built 5/93:
 Why will the brake wear warning light in the dash not turn off even after
replacing the damaged sensor?
