<E30> accelerator cable

everyone,

i have this problem with the accelerator so i have some questions.

problem:

when i blip the throttle there is a moments hesitation before the gas "comes
on". if i do it really quick, like a quick tap, the engine stumbles but
catches up. it sorta drops from idle a coupla hundred rpms then revs freely
with the pedal. if i do it slightly slower but not gradual it is okay. is
this clear enough?

what i think:

at first i thought maybe the accelerator cable was loose but i checked the
adjustment and tightened it somewhat. it really didn't help much. next i
thought maybe the cable was stretched and needed replacement, is this
common? the car has ~120k on it. one thing i did was to check this was to
blip the throttle using the lever on the intake. if i do it quick (as
above) i experience the same phenomenom. i can also do it slower, but not
gradual, and it will rev freely. any ideas what could be causing this? i'm
at a loss. it really doesn't affect drivability but it is rather annoying
and i would like to fix it. can anyone out there help me?

thanks for all help.
