1 is that he sent his query as <Re: BMW-digest V9 #984>
which didn't help.

2 His trunk is wet:

Jason, check that the seals around the rear light clusters are all sound. It
is common for water to get into the trunk via hardened rubber seals or where
they have been 'pinched' out of place by a re-fit of the lamp unit.
