<E30> M20/B27 redline

I believe that the stock Eta has a redline of 4750.  It is definitely
not 5000, so it sounds like your car may have an aftermarket chip.

You can check if your car is chipped by opening up the DME.  '84 Etas
needed to have a new chip soldered in, but you should see some
telltale markings (e.g., "... Performance Chip") if you have an
aftermarket chip.
