GM buying BMW
In response to GM buying BMW,
I have read (with great horror!), that this may happen, BMW are
financially
under pressure because of a purchase they made five years ago, namely
Rover, one of the last British owned British cars. The Quandt family
(majority owners of BMW), have benn quoted as saying that they are not
selling BMW, but analysts say they might have to sell some share to save
the company. BMW's survival depends on two things, both Rover related.
One, they have approached the British government for a hand-out (a few
million!!), they say they need this to save jobs at the Rover
manufacturing plants, one of Britian's major employers, if they get
something it will help. Two, Rover have just launced their new 3-series
competitor, the "75", (nice car), it will be launched in the USA (maybe
badged as an MG) soon in a bid to bring Rover back into profit, and into
the US market, where they have been noticeably absent since the
disasterous sales of the Rover "800 Sterling", (it apparrently lost $300
million dollars since BMW's take-over, it wasn't making money before
that either). So, Rover is their achillies heel at the moment, and this
is why they may have to sell. All this selling is hyped by Volvo's
demise, Nissan's ill fate and other looming buy-outs which may never
happen.
