Check out the latest issue (March '99) of Automobile Magazine.  Page 28.:

"BMW X3 & K2: Bavaria mulls two more 3s."

X3 is said to be a jacked-up 3-Touring (think Subaru Legacy/Outback) not a
complete new vehicle like the X5.
