I've had good results using a universal 4-wire O2 sensor from Mesa Performance
(about $70, compared to $150 for the Bosch from the dealer).  Trying to find a
$30-40 unit for Fords didn't work out because I couldn't get a close enough
match on the spec.  The  unit from Mesa requires cutting and splicing into the
BMW harness.  No big deal since they give you directions, connectors and
shrink wrap.
