Michael,
My '85 had similar symptoms when I first purchased it. Definately, a
chip (JimC) will do wonders for smoothing the power curve out.
Some other things to check:
1. the O2 sensor could be failing (getting "lazy"), though this
shouldn't really affect WOT operation;
2. vacuum leaks, which are mischeivous little buggers and cause all
sorts of driveability problems;
3. the AFM could be heading for the barn, check with a MM (an analog
MM is great for this) to insure that it doesn't have any "dead spots"
throughout the swing of the flap.
Good luck!
