Yeah, V-8's suck. j/k Has any auto manufacturer ever produced an inline
8? A flat 8? I know porsche had a flat 6 and some kick butt swedish car
companiies use inline 5's. I think the new Bugatti touring coupe has a
W18.
Any other interesting engine configurations? I would think that if anyone
could build an inline8 it would be BMW.

I owned a 1950 Buick that had a straight 8, (262 cid) with overhead valves.
Buick discontinued the engine design in 1953 in favor of the V8.
The issue with the design is that the crank is so long that the cylinders
furthest away from the timing chain become mechanically out of time under
power. Crankshaft wind-up.
I would also assume that the free forces and moments (harmonic behavior)
would be very similar to the V8.
The straight and opposed-cylinder 6 & V12 are the engines with the best
harmonic behavior.
