I am not a chemist by trade or know the active ingredients, but I have used
this stuff and since stopped. I find that it makes the wipers squeak.
Actually, there is an old fashion trick someone told me about. I had my
wipers fail in a rainstorm and was told to smash two cigarettes on the wet
windscreen and wipe the tobacco over the glass. To my surprise, it worked.
Best use for tobacco I have found.
As for squeaky wipers, I have heard complaints of this nature before. It
seems if you keep the window saturated it isn't too bad, but when it needs
reapplication, it gets squeaky.
The stuff is difficult to remove completely, but there must be some solvent
somewhere.
As you may or may not know, glass is not absolutely smooth. rather, it has
microscopic surface irregularities that force water to adhere and bead by
surface tension on the window, thus distorting vision. RainX fills these
microscopic voids, defeating any hold for water to grab onto (sort of trying
to grab one of the Spice Girls after they have been heavily covered in
grease). Water and our pudgy hands slide right off.
With my latest car I refuse to use anything on the windscreen. My method is
to keep both the wipers and the glass as clean as possible prior to wet
weather travel. Replace your wipers every 6 months (more if you get acid
rain and soot) and they should give you good visibility.
