E30 Steering Wheel Squeak

For no apparent reason, just started to experience an annoying squeak from
where the steering wheel turns on the column. Appears to originate right at
the joint (about 3" below wheel).
My first inclination is to cautiously squirt a little WD40 in there. Any
reason why that might be a bad idea?
