The self-leveling rear suspension on E28 //M5's is designed to firm up the
rear end when it is heavily loaded (back seat or trunk) in order to reduce
excessive negative camber. At sustained Autobahn (or just plain high, for
us Americans) speeds, the car *would* ride only on the inner portions of
its rear tires if not for this system, possibly leading to tire failure or
a blowout. Of course, this problem occurring *at* high speeds would be
quite a mess, and cause all occupants of the car great consternation.
