'87 528e valve adjustment

I bought my 1987 528e automatic at a Mercedes dealership which
supposedly has two bmw mechanics in its service dept.  I had 60,000 mile
service done there shortly after I bought it and , while expensive, I'm
pleased enough with them.  My service manager told me that a valve
adjustment is standard maintenance every 15K miles.  Is this true, and,
if so, about how much should a valve adjustment cost?
