Blind Man Guilty of Drunken Driving

 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A blind man who slammed into a tree after taking his
friend's BMW out for a spin has been fined $513 for drunken driving.

Herbert Council, 39, said he thought he knew the roads in Mufreesboro well
enough to navigate them with the help of friend Jeffrey Hamilton. So after
having a few drinks on Dec. 10, the pair put the top down on Hamilton's BMW
convertible and went for a drive in the rain.

Council missed a sharp left curve and slammed head-on into a tree. He suffered
a broken arm; Hamilton had a shattered leg.Both men later admitted to troopers
that they'd been drinking. On Friday, Council was ordered by Rutherford County
General Sessions Court to pay $513 in fines.

Council, who was wearing wraparound sunglasses when he crashed, told troopers
to ``never let a blind man drive.''
