The circuit cut city guy is handing you a bucket of crap.
If the amp's steady state rating is 400 watts RMS then you can estimate the
peak demand for brief periods as 1.5 x 400= 600 watts. Then if your system
is weak and you are only providing 12v the peak current will be 50amps. Not
80.
Also, when the amp first turns on the in-rush current will still be limited
by the charging of the input capacitors and the resistance of the loop,
it's not a dead short and will still not be 80amps and most modern amps
have a slow start front end to avoid spikes into the power supplies.
The guy's trying to sell you the magic no O2 thick as your thumb wires at a
significant markup.
