<E34> Power Steering Fluid Change

     Hi,
     
     On my '91 535i I need to replace the two hoses that come off the power 
     steering reservoir.   A few questions related to that task:
     
     Is there an effective way to drain all the fluid out of the system?
     
     Can I use a synthetic, like Redline D4ATF in place of the 
     petroleum-based ATF it has now (I assume)?
     
     If I do use a synthetic, should I clean out the system somehow or is 
     this not necessary?   Any concerns about mixing the two types?
     
     Lastly, it sounds like E28s have a filter in the system; is there one 
     on E34s and if so, how do I replace it?   Bentley makes no mention.
     
     Anything else that I should do while I'm at it?
