[E30 M3] Sudden popping noise/loss of power - HELP!

All of a sudden my E30 M3 has started going "pop pop pop pop" -
about a mile away from home.  This was accompanies by a loss
of power and the popping happens when the throttle is open
only and varies directly with engine RPM.  There's also a bit
of a hum/whoosh/moo when the throttle is closed.

I drove home at low rpm and parked tonight - what is it?

Loss of spark to one cylinder?  worse?

Car hasn't been driven since.  help!
