Nope, you shouldn't have too big a repair bill.
This exact problem happened to me a while back, and my first thought
was "Oh, sh*t, the water pump is blown." Well, the clue that it's not
so bad here is that the alternator light went on.
You see, the same belt that drives the alternator drives the water
pump. When the belt breaks, your coolant stops circulating. So,
check out your belts, and if it is indeed broken, it's a $12 (OEM BMW)
fix!
