e-36 fuel guage erratics

I have recently had the fuel gauge on my '98 328i act very strangely. After
filling, when the ambient temperature is below 40F, the gauge will suddenly
swing from registering full to zero (lo fuel light comes on also). Then
just as suddenly it will swing to full reading. This erratic behavior only
seems to last as long as the tank is actually full. Once the fuel level
goes down (5 min <>), the gauge registers properly.

Anyone else experienced this?
