cd changer no functioning

I own a '90 E30M3 which I purchased last April. The only flaw is that the CD
changer i n the trunk is inoperable.  It appears to be a BMW factory unit.
The problem is when I  hit the mode button, it switches from FM to AM to WB.
It never shows a CD.  There is power to the cd unit and all connections appear
to be in order.  What could the problem be?
