I also installed a K&N Cone type filter which replaces the entire cubic foot
of plastic and snorkel works in the forward port corner of the 'ol engine room
on my 89 325iS. It's much easier to check...and a snap to remove everything
from the trottle body on: two 13mm bolts, 1 hose clamp, 2 snap on electrical
connections and viola! Total access to the entire port side of the plant...
I really doubt that the change makes any significant quantifiable performance
gains, however the thing SOUNDS great and looks much cleaner.
I also really like the fact that you can SEE the element which makes it much
easier to avoid giving the old girl a case of bronchitis due to a dirty
filter...
