Cat Converters - Restrictions?

My understanding is that, at least for U.S. models, a properly functioning
BMW catalytic converter is not restrictive, and removing it does not, in
itself, yield more performance.  I've seen a few postings lately that
suggest otherwise.  Does anyone have any evidence that cat removal
will produce any power gains?  Or is this just the latest B.S. to circulate
among the inexperienced?
