<E30> Rear Axle Nut Lock Plate Removal?

The CV boots on my '85 325e need replacing, and I haven't been able to get
past the 1st step...remove the lock plate.  The manuals say to simply lift it
out...maybe mine is just old and rusted but I haven't been able to figure out
a way to apply any measurable force to it.

Does anyone have any advice on how to remove it.
