Hi Brian,
The BMW Enthusiasts Companion (a collection of Roundel articles and
letters) contains the article you seek.
There is a tech article which describes the reset procedure for the
early style diagnostic connector and describes in detail how to build
your own reset tool.
There is also a letter from a reader which describes the reset procedure
for later model diagnostic connectors not covered in the article (like
mine), and notes some changes necessary for the reset tool to work with
the smaller pins in this style connector.
My home crafted reset tool costs $5.27 and works great!
