True, the cup removal tool is not needed, however, destroying the cup is 
not either.  Best, quickest and cheapest way is... from inside the car:

1. Remove knob
2. Pull up rubber boot to reveal top of cup
3. Take two small flat head screwdrivers and insert them in the 
   edge of the cup at the 3:00 and 9:00 positions
4. Cross the screwdrivers across the middle with the right one
   behind the left
5. With thumb and forefinger on tops of screwdrivers turn clockwise 
   90 degrees
6. Pull up on shiftlever to remove lever and cup... piece of cake!

I've used this method many times with the ShifterFest folks and it works 
great.  Once you get used to it it's a 30 second job.  Got a cup removal 
tool with my ERK and unless you have a lift it's a PITA and much slower 
than the two screwdriver method.

Wreckin' your cup is ok the first time I guess (if your car is more than 
a couple years old), but chances are you'll have it in and out a few 
times (gotta try out the latest BL/SS stuff ya know).  Don't think 
you'll want to buy a new cup each time, even at just $10 a piece.
