Dan,
I'm no turbo expert, so you might want to take what I say with a grain
of salt. (But I have owned and tinkered with several turbo cars - the
wife still has her Volvo 944 turbo)
Maybe what you're really looking for is an engine management system that
will dynamically adjust timing and/or turbo boost. Water injection, too,
possibly (but this treats the symptom, not the cause). Are you using an
intercooler? Got an appropriate fuel map?
You might want to talk to the folks at HKS. They make a pretty slick
setup. I don't have any contact info, but I've seen 'em on a turbo Supra
and a turbo Volvo.
Saab (don't laugh) also had a system called APC that lowers boost at
signs of pre-ignition. Works great on their turbo cars and on turbo
Volvos (much better than Volvo's own 'Turbo +'). BTW, it is not unusual
to pull 200 + HP out of a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder Volvo with a few tweaks.
Good luck,
- -jerry
