Factory stickers on mirrors

Hi.  I picked up my M3 on the 12/16/98.  I washed the car that weekend
and noticed that there is a sticker on the bottom of the mirrors.  I
attempted to peel one off and got a checkerboard of silver and normal
car paint.  Should I have done this?  Also, I want to remove the
checkerboard left on the underside of the mirror.  What can I use to
remove it?
