John,

Sorry to hear about your problems.  I think you should go back to the
company who issued the check (hopefully a bank.  A convenience store is
going to be tougher) and ask if the check cleared.  If it hasn't then see
about stopping payment.  This may be a pain in the ass but it's the only
way you can recoup any of your money.  Like I said, a bank will be easier
to deal with (you do have your receipt...right?), but if you used a 7-11 or
something like that it's still not impossible.  Have patience and keep
asking for the person who can help you with this problem.

On a similar note, the way I usually buy from the net is via UPS COD.  The
buyer ends up paying an additional $5 COD fee but it's well worth it.  Make
friends with your delivery guy (I do his taxes every year for free) and
he'll cut you some slack about opening the package to make sure everything
is in order.  Sellers can also protect themselves by requesting a cashiers
check in lieu of regular check (they stopped doing cash with this last
labor negotiations).  This way, everyone's happy.
