What is an Autocross?

OK this question looks dumb.

In the UK, I used to take part in Autocross. It was two at a time around a
grass circuit. Reading about the US Autocross, it isn't what I used to play
at 30 yeas ago.

I am trying to put together some non-track driving events for a BMW Meeting
in the UK next year.

Please could sombody post me a description of what your Autocross is? (To
save space on the digest, I don't mind if you mail it direct)
