<E36> Running troubles

Hi all,

I have been having some running troubles with my '93 E36 325i for a while
now. Every so often it runs jerky with 'flat-spots', next day fine. I have
recently noticed that when the rear demister is switched on and I declutch
and brake coming up to junctions etc that the idle hunts between 500 - 1000
rpm until I have stopped. I suspect that the idle control valve is faulty /
sticky. Could this also cause the jerkiness? Does this valve only function
at idle or does it have any other functions? Has anybody had similar
experiences and what was the cure?
