Try this...

Register the car requesting a new personalized plate with the same numbering
as your black and yellow plate.  When they send you your new plate, put your
old plate on the car (same numbers), and put a current registration sticker
on it.

If the plate number on the car matches the plate number in the system and
your registration is current, you are fine.
