e30 IX front wheel bearing replacement

I have '89 325 iX with 100K.  It felt like a wheel was out of balance.  
I took the car in for wheel balancing and was told that front right 
wheel bearing was very  loose.  They tightened it up and balanced the 
wheels.  The steering wheel still shimmies (SP?) when making turns. Much 
less than before but still noticeable.
 
So my question is : Can the bearing be changed at home with hand tools?  
Any special tools?
There was a mention by Brent that rear bearing should be left to the 
pros.
I'm reasonably competent with tools. Should the fronts be done together? 
 
BTW, BMP has the same front bearings for all E30 exc. M3 but BAS has one 
specifically for the iX.  Who's right?
