'84 318I SPEEDOMETER QUIT! HELP!

Greetings:

I have a 1984 318i and the speedometer quit recently. I have confirmed
that the components in the differential are working properly. It looks
to be in the dash. Is this model or year famous for these types of
problems? Is there an (easy) diagnosis I can perform to determine the
problem, other than ripping apart the dash. Is there easier access to
the speedometer than by thrashing the dash? HELP!
