Re: E-30 rearend noise

Hi,
I just got my '87 325 on the road after having the auto trans rebuilt. I
bought the car last year with the bad trans and so this is the first I have
actually driven it. The tires are in pretty good condition but I am getting
a noise from the rear of the car. It sounds like the car has snow tires on
and gives out a growl or deep humming. It begins to become noticable at about
20 mph and gets higher pitched as I gain speed. It seems to be totally speed
related and no apparent relation to load. What would be the most likely source
for this noise, axle bearing? The car has 136,000k miles on it. How do I
isolate the source of the noise.
Thanks,
Peter Coke
