Try changing its diet (warm milk often helps) and replace its litter more
often, if that doesn't work you may have to put it to sleep.

Seriously, First I would check for a loose or rusted heat shield.  I had a
car (not BMW) where the catalytic was just broken to pieces, when I removed
it, chunks just dropped out of the pipe, so a damaged unit it may not be too
far off.
