Rear side airbags safe for kids?

Can anyone here point me towards some specific sources of information regarding
the safety of rear side airbags for small children?  I've been hunting around
and haven't found a thing.  I've checked the BMW and Volvo sites, the NHTSA site,
and even called the NHTSA hotline without any luck.  Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
