well the point Scott is trying to make is A vehicle can only take 
advantage of higher octane if there is a condition requiring it

spark advance, high compression, and forced induction, all require a 
higher then stock octane because they are changing the "effective 
compression".. yes 10.5 is a high but it will run fine with 89 octane 
gas if you chip, turbo, increase compression you need to increase the 
octane of the fuel to compensate for the knock factor all 3 of these 
factors work in conjuction with one another. this is why you will see 
most turbo cars with low compression and Boost retarding ignition..
now if you want to run race gas you can run High compression extra boost 
and a better spark curve. all producing more power but in a stock car 
the systems WILL NOT make amny more power if there is none to be made..
