E-30 318is Rear Window Explosion

I have recently ran into a problem with my 1991 318is.  I was driving down
the road and needed to use the rear window defroster.  After about 5-10
minutes of having the defroster on I heard a loud pop and smelled a slight
electrical burning smell.  I looked back and saw that my entire rear window
had shattered.  All the glass was still there, but every square inch was
cracked.  I spoke with a friend who owned a 1988 325is that had the same
problem twice.  I contacted the local dealer, who is now in the process of
speaking with BMW NA.  I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar
problem and if so, have there been any recalls on this.
