E28 Temp Gage
Cary,
My experience with my E28 535i is that the temp gauge never gets
above 1/2 gauge. If yours gets above this in any condition, the system
is starting to go sour. First thing in these older BMWs is the
radiator. They are notorious for build-up over time(~100k miles and
over) and need to be replaced. The other is the expansion tank. The
plastic seems to deform over time and the lips that secure the cap bend
and don't seal correctly. A pressure check of the system will tell if
there is a pressurization problem.
Also, normal things like bad water pump, thermostat can go bad and
should be replaced according to the sevice intervals in the Inspection
cycles.
Theres evidence that you should not use Prestone in these systems
either. The ultimate resolution is to buy the non-phosurous anti-freeze
from the dealer or other otlet to ensure correct and long life of the
cooling system. It cost more, but is the best according to some on the
list.
Take Care,
Russ

All,
What have been the experiences of the majority as far as
temp gage position during normal operation? Middle, 3/4, etc.?
At idle in hot weather/cold, long downhill stretches (foot off of gas)?
Mine seems to be creeping up from where I'm accustomed to seeing it,
weather conditions taken into account.
Thanks.
