E30 Interior Light Delay

The interior lights on my '86 325es stay on all the time when the switch is
in the position for them to come on with the doors. I would like to get
them to at least work when the doors open. Is it possible to remove the
delay relay? Is this problem most likely in the relay or somewhere else?
