<E28> Ticking noise/Check Engine

Been a while since here, but now ask questions again.
A: I've got a 1988 528e and the under dash ticking is driving me crazy.
Some one sent me a note quite sometime ago as to how the fix is done, but
can't find the email.
B: My "Check Engine" light is on, under the speedo's 140 mpg tag. I have
had a local dealership check it with their cool little $8000 tool, and
there are no faults. The light comes on when the engine warms up.
