Throttle position switch woes?

Hi all,
Does anybody have any experience of throttle position switches on E36's? I
want to investigate mine as part of a 'get rid of the surging / missing'
problem that I have with my '93 325i. Do they actually send throttle
position i.e continuous track potentiometer or is it just a closed /full
throttle indicator? If I remove it, does it have to be put back in a
particular position? Any help appreciated!
