RE: bmw-digest V9 #576/ Blue lights
The reason we are switching to Blue lights instead of
staying with Red is two-fold. First and foremost blue is compatible with
Night Vision Goggles (NVG's) as they are away from the area where NVG's
operate (600-900 nanometers) while blue is at 470-480 nms. Red operates at
650 nms give or take a few nms.
Second is that blue lighting puts less strain on your eyes
and the eye is most sensitive to blue-green light (meaning less is needed).
The military still uses color (hues) for coding such as red
for danger, blue or green for normal operations. The auto industry does the
same thing, look at the instruments of your car, and most will show green
for OK and red for danger.
The real issue here is what is luminated using either white
or blue light. If the two lights are of equal luminance, the blue light will
always look brighter to the human. This is brightness perception which uses
all the color channels, both chromatic and achromatic. Luminance is a
photometric measure which is measuring the number photons striking an object
per unit area. So to cut to the chase the same two lights, one which is
perceived as white while the other which is perceived as blue, with equal
luminance; the blue light will always be perceived as brighter. Brightness
is a human perceptual measure, luminance is photometric measure. The
lighting companies know this and do not use blue because most people are
used to white hues.
So what is better to see with at night. Whatever you
perceive as brighter. For most of us with normal color vision, blue will be
better.

Electronic Displays" edited by Helino Widdle and David Post. It explains
most of the above better than I can.
Hope this helps tell you why one color (hue) may be better
for perception than another for driving your BMW at night.

- - blue is in the process of phasing out the red lights!!

Last Friday I purchased the HKS exhaust for my M3 engined
325I. I did not have time to dyno the car yet, but it seems
to have a
better response at low revs ( 0 - 3500 rpm ).
The S. steel HKS exhaust sound slightly louder and deeper
than the
stock M3
exhaust I had before, it also weights ~25 Lb. less.
This exhaust sounds louder on the 3.2L cars.
Quality is outstanding - better than the Supersprint, MUCH
better
than the B&B Tri-Flow.
HKS( www.hksusa.com) is made in Japan and they have very
good
reputation,
you, won't see '20 hp gain' claims from them ...

With any system, don't expect much power gain,
the stock system is very good ( but heavy - over 50 Lb. ).

From using hood bras in the past and talking with an award
winning body
shop owner, the bra is probably not a good idea, unless you
have the
ability to remove the bra on a weekly basis for washing. In
most cases,
the bra is left on, causing dirt to be caught between the
hood and bra.
Also, over the long haul, the paint may have a newer shine
to it ran the
rest of the hood.

Hello all,
Last night on my way home I noticed something was ticking
very loudly in
my 95 325i. I started to try to isolate where this ticking
noise was
comming from and found out it was coming from my shifter.
Not only was
it ticking quite loud but it was also moving with the sound
of the tick.
Meaning it was vibrating. This only happens when I'm in
third or fifth
gear. It's almost as if the gear isn't going in properly
beacause I can
pull it out of gear without pressing the clutch. Again this
is only
third and fifth gear. I tried putting it in gear a little
harder but to
no avail. The car runs fine in all gears. If it wasn't for
that dam
ticking noise and the shifter vibrating you wouldn't even
notice there
was anything wrong. Anyone ever had this kind of problem
with their 5
sp. cars? I'm crossing my fingers that it's not a tranny
problem but if
it is I want to get it fixed A.S.A.P. Could it be my
clutch? The car
has 59,000 miles on it and I don't drive too agressively.
