Re: Uh-oh...German!

I also picked up the "thank you microphone" reference :) I can speak and write
German quite well, but my grammar is far from perfect...

...I also learned a few of the things you should NEVER say when in Germany :)

For example, I was in Germany two years ago and was sitting on a train to
Hamburg. I had purchased some bon-bons (candy) and was having a pleasant
conversation with a sweet old lady, when I decided to offer her some candy. So
I held out the bag of candy and said "hey susse!" Well to anyone who doesn't
speak German, this apparently does not mean "would you like some candy," but
rather, "Hey Baby!" Needless to say the rest of the train was amused with the
exception of my 78 year old companion :) ...I guess I should hav paid more
attention in school.

A few other no-no's:

"Ich bin warm" = Direct Translation: I am warm; Actual Translation: I am gay!
"Ich bin heiss" = Direct Translation: I am hot; Actual Translation: I am
horny!
"Ich bin kalt" =Direct Translation: I am cold; Actual Translation: I am
frigid!

Next time you visit that enormous tourist trap known as Der Hof Breuhaus (sp?)
be careful when you want to tell your waiter it is hot in there...
