Double-clutching on down shifts

Hi folks !
Is double-clutching on downshifts necessary ? I do it habitually because
of the British cars I used to drive (in the 60's) with
chattter-box/rock-crusher trannies. Double-clutching helps preserve
the synchros but adds wear to the clutch mechanism and uses a little
more fuel (bibbing the throttle).
Please comment !
Cheers
