<E36> Losing Oil Mysteriously

All-

'92 325i w/ 118K began mysteriously losing 1 to 1.5 quarts of Mobil 1
between oil changes (3K) about three changes ago.

No visible leaks (or puddles) and no visible smoke from exhaust, etc.  Have
not checked coolant.  Am experiencing slight hesitation in low revs of each
gear and poor cold performance (until O2 kicks in) but have no idea to
explain the oil loss...

Any ideas before I take her in?
