Here's my list of Parking Lot tips:
Park far away in a lone space whenever you can. (No-brainer.)
Park next to someone who looks as if they're just as concerned about
their car as you are about yours. (Park next to nicely maintained cars
(clean BMW's if possible); avoid junkers.)
Avoid cars likely to have kids opening the doors. (Vans, SUV's,
station wagons, etc.)
Avoid parking next to 2-door cars. (This is REALLY important. 2-door
cars usually have doors that are wider, heavier, swing out more, and
are thus more likely to reach your car and cause damage.)
When you have a choice, expose your car to the passenger door side of
another car rather than the driver's side. (The passenger door less
likely to be used -- that's why cars usually get fewer dings on the
driver's side. A clear-cut choice is rare or transient, but sometimes
occurs when choosing end spots, or between two unoccupied spots with
cars on either side (choose the left one if the cars on either side
are parked head-in, if not adjust accordingly). The same rule applies
when choosing which car to give more leeway when one is on either side
of you.)
YMMV.
Happy motoring!
