Congratulations!  What you've described sounds like an M3 test mule.  But
we'll never know what they were testing... a US version M engine,
transmission, suspension, etc.  It would make sense for BMW M to use E46
sedan, since that platform has already been committed to production and they
wouldn't want to draw too much attention.  That's why they badged it 328i.
Last year, early summer, I spotted an E46 in the Death Valley, closely
followed by a 5-er touring.  They seem to always travel in packs.  

Too bad you didn't get a chance to see the interior.  It would be
interesting to see if they were using a sequential transmission.  Now, that
would make me put some money down on a deposit.
