you can check output of the o2 sensor with a voltmeter..
with car warmed up, hook the dvm across 2 wires of the o2 sensor and you
should get a voltage which varies between 0 and 1 volt..
(I had your same symptoms, checked and got 0.2 to 0.4 volts for o2 sensor
which meant it was dead)
getting the old o2 sensor out might be a pain in the ass
but replacing it should fix the problem
I don't think the ford sensor will work.. (it is a 2 wire)
you have a 3 wire sensor (includes a heater)
or is that 3/4 wire..
